Frequently Asked Questions

The Basics

  • CALL is a three-year leadership development program for motivated leaders who are currently (or seek to be) living, working, and leading in the TFA Appalachia region. Members will serve as leaders in their communities, spanning designated counties in West Virginia, Southwest Virginia, Northeast Tennessee, and Eastern Kentucky. Members will individually and collectively contribute toward TFA Appalachia’s 2030 goal: By 2030, twice as many students in Central Appalachian communities will achieve postsecondary readiness and success, indicating that they are on a path to economic mobility and a future filled with possibility.

To reach this goal, we invite you to join us as Lab members, a robust team of leaders across all sectors and industries who will drive toward impact in our Appalachian communities.

  • Visit the About the Lab section of our website to learn more.

  • Visit the Core Pillars section of our website to learn more.

  • Lab members will live and work within the TFA Appalachia region. TFA Appalachia’s region represents designated counties in Eastern Kentucky, West Virginia, Northeast Tennessee, and Southwest Virginia. Eligible counties are detailed on the hyperlinks for each state.

  • We invite community leaders, including but not limited to TFA alumni, to apply. Visit the Eligibility section of our website for more information.

  • The Lab is a three-year leadership development opportunity.

  • We anticipate 5-10 CALL positions will be awarded in 2023.

  • There is no preferred career path, sector, or industry for accepted members. As part of our systems change orientation, we maintain that the region will require a robust pipeline of top talent across many sectors, industries, and career paths in order to achieve both TFA Appalachia’s 2030 goal and the region’s aspired bright future. We are excited to recruit seasoned leaders from any sector or industry who will refine and act on personal theories of change in pursuit of our region’s 2030 goal.

  • If a Lab member becomes unemployed during the fellowship term, TFA Appalachia will review each situation on a case-by-case basis in partnership with the fellow, acknowledging that the program requires participants to work in the TFA Appalachia region.

  • The Lab requires that participants live and work within the TFA Appalachia region. If members relocate during the fellowship term, to remain in the program they must relocate to another county within the TFA Appalachia region. If members do not fulfill the fellowship term for any reason, they will keep only the financial award amount disbursed to-date. No further awards will be issued if the fellow does not fulfill the program term.

  • Part-time employment circumstances will be reviewed for eligibility on a case-by-case basis. Between professional and community leadership roles, successful Lab applicants will be able to demonstrate the following:

    • Equipped with a vision for how members would uniquely contribute to the TFAA 2030 goal

    • Professionally ready to refine and act on a personal theory of change in pursuit of the TFAA 2030 goal

    • Prepared to anticipate and articulate their own leadership development needs

    • Focused on and engaged with their community within the TFAA geographic region

  • As part of the Lab’s goal for members to build nuanced understandings of issues and opportunities affecting at least 12 communities acros Central Appalachia, the quarterly convenings will rotate across different geographies in the four-state TFA Appalachia region. Interested in showing off your community? You may even have the opportunity to serve as a “host” member and have the cohort come to the community hwere you live and/or work!

  • Generally, the quarterly convening dates are determined three months in advance based on popular vote across the Lab cohort. Convening dates typically take place on either a Friday or a Saturday.

  • Yes, Lab members are responsible for covering their travel costs associated with the in-person quarterly convenings. However, if the distance between a member’s home and the convening location is at least 2 hours, members are eligible for a travel reimbursement of up to $200 per convening.

  • In-person commitment: Across the three-year membership term, members are expected to attend each quarterly, in-person convening day (four days per year). Given that the site for the convenings rotates across our four-state geography, there may be convening locations that will require you to stay overnight before and/or after the convening date.

Asynchronous commitment: Outside of the quarterly in-person convenings, members are expected to be asynchronously pursuing experiential, social, and formal learning in alignment with a personalized learning plan (which the member will co-create alongside TFA Appalachia staff). Members are expected to participate in a quarterly, virtual 1:1 check-in with a TFA Appalachia coach to process, share reflections, course correct as needed, etc (four virtual check-ins per year). There is no hard-and-fast requirement for number of hours each week or month that members will spend on their learning plans, as we acknowledge the inherent ebb-and-flow of schedules and busy seasons within members’ personal and professional communities; however, we do expect that members are making meaningful progres on their learning plans between check-ins.

Lab Benefits

  • Visit the Benefits section of our website for more information.

  • Both the financial award and the supplemental relocation award (if eligible) are counted as taxable income (very similar to your AmeriCorps award, for TFA alumni); we recommend you consult with your tax professional and review IRS resources on the 1099-Misc form you will receive as a recipient of these funds.

  • The financial award is disbursed annually over three years, in installments of $2,500 per year.

  • The financial award can spent be at your discretion. This may include things like home purchase or improvement, loan relief, graduate studies or other professional development, or savings. These payments can be provided as a lump sum within 30 days of the member providing proof of home purchase.

  • If Lab members purchase a home in the region at any point during the three-year program term, advance payments of the remaining installments can be disbursed within 30 days of the member providing proof of home purchase. Important Note: Participants are not required to purchase a home to receive payment at the slower rate.

  • Lab members who do not currently have permanent residence in the TFA Appalachia region will receive customized support in choosing housing, locating amenities, and building a vibrant community in Appalachia. Specifically, TFA Appalachia will provide housing resources which aggregate options and amenities to simplify the process; but in no way recommends or endorses any options. Members who are not recipients of employer-provided relocation assistance will also be eligible to apply for a one-time supplemental relocation award (up to $5,000, depending on move distance and household size). Application Process

  • Applications can be submitted between April 1 and June 3, 2023. Application review begins on June 5, and applicants can expect to know of their final application decision no later than July 28, 2023.

  • In partnership with our TFA Appalachia team, a subset of our regional Executive Advisory Board and community leaders will review applications, aiming to build a cohort representing rich and robust diversity across identities, professional experiences, skill sets, perspectives, and strengths. This group will be looking for alignment with Teach For America’s core values, applied in the context of potential members’ contributions here in Central Appalachia. The below competencies will be evaluated, both in the initial application and interview processes:

    • Pursue Equity

    • Strengthen Community

    • Achieve Impact

    • Choose Courage

    • Act with Humility

    • Demonstrate Resilience

    • Learn Continuously

We are excited to recruit seasoned leaders who will refine and act on personal theories of change in pursuit of TFA Appalachia’s 2030 goal. To do so, we expect that successful members will continuously challenge and expand their understanding of regional assets and barriers, grow deep roots in their communities and work in partnership with local leaders and community members, and contribute to shifting national narratives to the power, possibility and potential of our region.

Check out our current cohort of CALL members for more information about the 2022 cohort.

  • There is no minimum number of years of professional experience required to apply (beyond the successful completion of TFA corps commitment, for TFA alumni). However, this program is designed to support seasoned systems-change leaders who are professionally ready to refine and act on personal theories of change.

There will be opportunity to engage in learning and networking with other members in the cohort, but much of the leadership development work will be pursued in a self-directed, asynchronous way. As such, successful candidates will be able to anticipate and articulate their leadership development needs.

Successful members will also be able to anticipate and articulate how their contributions as a member would uniquely contribute toward TFA Appalachia’s 2030 goal (see the Personal Statements section of the Application Components page for more detail).

  • Anyone who currently lives and works in the TFA Appalachia region (and is committed to doing so for the next three years) is eligible to apply to the Lab through the Rooted Track. Please see the Eligibility section of our website for more detail.

  • At this time, the Relocation Track is only available to TFA alumni. Applicants must have successfully completed their corps commitment. Please see the Eligibility section of our website for more detail.

  • Visit the Application Components section of our website for more information about what to expect when submitting the application.

  • Yes, you can ask a TFA staff member to serve as one of your professional references. However, we ask that your second professional reference be someone who is NOT a TFA staff member — such as a former principal, current or former employer, etc.

  • Visit the Rooted Track section of our website to learn more.

  • Programming will begin in September 2023. For those who relocate to the region, members are expected to relocate by January 2024, but will be expected to travel to the region for any quarterly in-person convenings taking place between the time of securing employment and official relocation.
